Educational Tool Selection
The educational game site, Quizalize, was selected for two reasons. First, it came recommended by instructors with a proven track record of successfully integrating educational technology into the classroom. Secondly, Quizalize claimed to provide a means to assist in differentiating student readiness based upon student performance (Zzish Ltd, 2023). Setting up an account, creating the first game set, creating classrooms, and monitoring the game play was simple for anyone familiar with other more common educational games such as Kahoot! or Gimkit (Kahoot!, 2023) (Gimkit, 2023). This game proved to be beneficial for student learning, specifically to meet drill and remediation needs. The format of this educational game would not lend itself to develop higher levels of thinking or questioning.
Use of Differentiation and Technology
Differentiation can benefit by the well-planned use of educational technology within a given lesson. Within the lesson plan selected for the Technology Lesson Demonstration Assignment, there existed two distinct opportunities for differentiation based upon readiness and learning preference. First, the lesson plan utilized the educational game Quizalize, which differentiates students based upon their game performance. Secondly, once sorted by readiness based upon objective mastery determined by game performance, Quizalize was set up to assign students follow-on activities via URLs from within the unit choice board. The assignments within the unit choice board allowed for a degree of student choice by learning preference. Even within a 1:1 device school, it is necessary to plan for and provide alternative learning activities in paper format for students whose device is forgotten or broken, or for students needing a break from their device.
