Mod 7 Wk 7 Video Discussion - Assistive Technology
Transcript
I teach four inclusion classes daily. Each class contains a large variety of accommodations sourced from Individualized Education Plans and 504s. Working in such classrooms, differentiation is essential to allow each student an opportunity to academically achieve to their greatest potential. Hughes & Roblyer (2023) discuss the importance of ensuring that the technology we integrate into our classroom includes assistive technology including both devices and services to help promote equity among our students. Tomlinson (2017) embraces technology for the assistance it can provide when differentiating for content, process and product. One example of an assistive technology I utilize is the reading program Achieve3000. This application provides content rich articles specifically tailored to a student’s reading LEXIL. Additionally, it provides read aloud assistance and access to zoom and highlighting options, further assisting special needs students. A second example of an assistive technology I utilize would be the Chromebook device. My inclusion students have access to numerous accommodations built into the Chrome OS or easily accessed through Chrome extensions. These include speech-to-text, high contrast visibility settings, and read aloud features, all of which help me meet the needs of my special education students.
